Pretty much this. I've always thought so too. The transformation item, the henshin sequence, the group of non-magical best friends/secret keepers, the character development of Yuugi from a shy boy with no friends into a confident young man with a whole posse of besties who help and defend him, the succession of Big Bads he fights, the stand-offish rival character who begrudgingly helps out in the end... it has all the same makings of a magical girl series, to be honest. Just with a touch of "Hikaru no Go" in the fact that he's aided by a magical spirit who helps him win games, rather than transforming into a magical version of himself.

... Well, unless you think of the Pharaoh's spirit being a magical version of himself. It works that way too.

I had the hardest time pinpointed exactly why I liked Yugioh since on the surface it didn't look like my type of anime. BUT NOW I UNDERSTAND!!!

D.N.Angel is a very well known magical boy anime =) I've watched it years ago and I really liked it. Plus, in terms of fictional characters... Dark is pretty hawt.

I actually heard of D.N.Angel waaaayyy back a long time ago but never watched it, and have no idea what it's about. I had no idea it could be considered 'magical boy'.. Now I'm interested. xD Is it good?

Well, it's been years since I've watched it but I definitely enjoyed it.

The story is about Daisuke Niwa, a normal boy who declares his crush for a girl named Risa Harada at the beginning of the story. He gets rejected and later at home Daisuke suddenly changes into a different person. He finds out that because of some strange curse all the males in his family gain the power to change into phantom thief Dark. Whenever he has romantic feelings about his crush, or just thinks about her too long, he will transform.

Meanwhile Daisuke's classmate, Satoshi Hiwatari also has a phantom thief living inside of him; Krad. Basically Dark and Krad hate each other, but some sort of friendship forms between Daisuke and Satoshi. (which has a bit of homo undertones, so if you're offended by that, you're warned xD)

And since Dark is a thief, they steal stuff =D And like in some well known magical girl thief anime like Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne and Kaitou Saint Tail, they send notifications before they steel something, in order to make it more exciting.

I was reading DNAngel a while back and I think I was enjoying it but the library stopped getting in volumes. I'll have to look into it again.
